Request the official export

On the web

Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.

In the mobile app

Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data.

These paths come from Character.AI’s official data-download guide, updated October 8. Interface labels may change; use the official guide if your screen differs.

How long does it take?

The official guide states 3–4 weeks.

The download arrives through an email link, which the guide says remains valid for seven days. That is the stated process, not a delivery guarantee from this site.

Record the request date and check the mailbox connected to the account, including spam or filtered folders. If the expected period has passed, use Character.AI’s help center rather than giving an unofficial exporter your password.

Archive checkedCheck several familiar conversations, not just the filename.

When the email arrives

  1. Download before the link expires. Save it somewhere you can locate again.
  2. Keep an untouched original. Make a working copy before experimenting with a viewer or editing a file.
  3. Check the contents. Open the archive with your device’s normal tools. Pick a conversation you know and look for its opening, a familiar event in the middle and its latest available messages. Note anything missing. A file that opens is not proof that every conversation, attachment or setting was exported.
  4. Keep a second private copy. Choose storage you control. Chat archives can contain sensitive information about you and other people.

While you wait, save a smaller story brief

Write down the character’s personality, your persona, relationship milestones, world rules and the last unresolved scene. This is faster to review than a long transcript and can help you restart your own story manually.

Use the local story worksheet to organize the brief. It does not read your export, contact Character.AI, retrieve deleted messages or send your notes to Pogee.

Can the export be imported into another app?

We have not verified a supported automatic Character.AI-to-Pogee import. Keep the original archive as a backup. If you choose to try a different app, start with a small brief of your own original story and check how the new app handles context.

For the reason people are backing up now, see our dated explanation of the company update.

Your notes. A new beginning.

Keep your brief close. Try one opening scene, then decide where the story goes.
